What is a glare shield?

Glare shields serve the purpose of obstructing the sun's rays, ensuring that the pilot's visibility of the instrument panel remains unobscured. This enables a comfortable and strain-free reading of the instruments, free from any glare. Additionally, they enhance the aesthetic appeal of older aircraft by giving them a contemporary cockpit appearance, all the while safeguarding the instruments against the sun's glare.

  • Vehicle visor attachment: In the context of cars, a glare shield is a visor attachment that helps block sun glare from bothering the driver or passenger. It usually attaches to the existing sun visor and provides extra shade without obstructing the view of the road ahead.

  • Aircraft instrument panel shade: In airplanes, a glare shield is a part of the cockpit that is designed to shield the instrument panel from the sun's rays. This helps pilots see the instruments clearly and avoid any glare that could make them difficult to read.

  • What are the 3 types of glare?

There are three main types of glare: Disability Glare, Discomfort Glare, and Reflection Glare. Disability glare occurs when a bright light impairs visual acuity in low light conditions. An example of this is experiencing temporary blindness from oncoming headlights while driving.
